On Beauty and Being Just by Elaine Scarry

Filed under: Doug & Doug Dig... by Doug Jones @ 8:46 am

Doug & Doug Dig

A new monthly feature from Canon Press.

From Doug Jones:
On Beauty and Being JustNever trust a book on aesthetics that lacks style. Sadly, that would wipe out most books on beauty. But not this one - Elaine Scarry’s On Beauty and Being Just. It’s been out for a while (1999), and it’s not written from a Christian perspective, but it can provoke Christians down all sorts of interesting and surprising paths. Scarry not only shows how beauty urges us on to truth and goodness, she also, unknowingly backs into something of a Trinitarian and covenantal angle on beauty: “Beauty is, then, a compact, a contract” of a reciprocal “gift of life.” Wonderful work, and she argues tightly but not in typical, stilted, Anglo-American ways. One of the best parts is that her prose is always human and sensuous. Great fun. And moving. “Beauty brings copies of itself into being. It makes us draw it, take photographs of it, or describe it to other people.” Read this book slowly a few times.

East Coast Conference: Living the Trinity

Filed under: Conferences by Austin @ 3:48 pm

What does the Trinity mean for love in the family and church, differences between men and women, inspiring children, and cherishing wives? Come join guest speaker Doug Jones and the saints at Holy Trinity Reformed Evangelical Church of Greer, SC, next weekend as they seek to explore these crucial questions! Doug Jones is a pastor at Christ Church in Moscow, ID, and our own dear editor here at Canon Press. Here’s the conference schedule to give you a taste: (more…)

knicks and knacks from Canon Press.

Filed under: *New* Books & Audio, Behind the Scenes, Promos & Giveaways by Frank @ 2:26 pm

By now, you faithful readers have probably figured out that this blog is kind of our bulletin board to let you know what’s new at Canon Press. The trouble is, we don’t want you to think that the blog is just a series of advertisements. After all, who really wants to read that? So, we’ve been trying to spruce up—solicit a few guest posts, quiz some of our authors on their books, and give you all a taste of what’s it like to work at Canon. (And no, you have no idea yet. Trust me.)

But there are also a lot of little updates and additions to our website: new books from other publishers, sneak previews for what’s ahead, new covers on classic Canon titles, and more. And since all those little things aren’t enough for a blog post on their own, I thought I’d post a collection here, just to make sure you don’t miss out on what’s up. (more…)

God Our Father

Filed under: *New* Books & Audio, Promos & Giveaways by Frank @ 1:26 pm

To kick off April and say “Goodbye!” to winter (we hope!), we’re releasing two new audio sets from Pastor Wilson this week.

Loving Little Ones The first, Loving Little Ones, is a four-part series on the fatherhood of God. Pastor Wilson calls parents to look at the example that God has given us in the Bible. Our God is a loving heavenly Father whose every action is motivated by the great love He has for His children. If we reflect on that, then we’ll learn a great deal, not only about our responsibility as parents but also our responsibility as God’s children.

Practical Christian Living: Vol. 2The other is Practical Christian Living: Volume 2. Building on the first volume, this set of sermons branches out to offer answers to common but difficult questions: “How do I live according to the will of God?” “How do I deal with the weight of sexual guilt?” “How do I tell others about this amazing grace I’ve been given?” Turning to the Scriptures, Pastor Wilson offers clear and simple admonitions about walking in the footsteps of Christ.
